Ben Erskine, Vice Principal at The Fulbridge Academy has created a bespoke 'beyond levels' assessment package. It assesses all areas of the children's learning - against the 8 domains of the Cambridge Primary Review (CPR). In doing so it promotes a broad and balanced curriculum that assesses the whole child. What is assessed is now aligned with lesson plans and what we teach, making it much easier for staff. Staff assess the children against whether they are beginning to learn something, developing their learning, embedding it or mastering it.
 
Workload has been reduced as a result of the new approach and the children are assessed against how well they know something rather than climbing the levels ladder, giving them a greater understanding of their learning. Ben has led the staff through the whole process whilst taking on staff views along the way. He has also aligned a company to his thinking and they’ve developed a bespoke tracking programme to suit their school approach. Through this approach Ben has created an assessment package that cuts workload, benefits the child and enables them to hold themselves to account.
 
Ben has delivered Inset training on this to staff in other schools, at conferences (including Whole Education), trainee students on three different courses and to CPR network meetings. He created a training course for Pearson Education on this approach, which is now published and being delivered all over the country.
