Case Study - Conyers School | Award Nomination 2016

Angela O'Boyle, Director of Learning/Team Leader of Humanities
Conyers School

Practice:
Angela has taken whole school literacy at Conyers School from strength to strength: she raised the profile of the library, bringing in authors, creating celebratory events such as Harry Potter night and Alice in Wonderland Tea party and planned a Roald Dahl birthday party to celebrate his 100th birthday. She also supported subject teachers through micro-courses and the development of iCheck to ensure a consistent message is delivered (part of the whole school development of iPads for learning with all students in all subjects). Angela has furthermore developed a dedicated reading pm tutorial which leads to greater independence in reading skills as students move through the school.

Impact:
Angela has made staff and students recognise the importance of improving literacy across the curriculum and recognition has moved swiftly to action. She has galvanised staff around a commitment to teaching literacy consistently and each teacher now has a clear sense that literacy is not a bolt on to their subject but central to the success of students. Teachers have reported feeling more confident with literacy in their curriculum. In-year progress across subjects suggests that students (and parents) are not only recognising the importance of literacy more fully, but they are actively engaged in the good practice which is being promoted.
