Case Study - Mangotsfield School | Award Nomination 2016

Michael O'Sullivan, Maths Intervention
Mangotsfield School

Practice:
Michael has been fundamental in unlocking the belief and potential of year 11 students at the Mangotsfield School. He brings a calmness and optimism into work every day, which is appreciated by every student. They are amazed by his bespoke and personalised system for devising targeted revision questions in maths. This systematic brilliance helps them see exactly where they have gone wrong, the number of marks to the next grade and, crucially, produces personalised worksheets to practise.

Impact:
Through working with small groups of students, Michael has become more and more aware of two key, related issues: students who lack confidence with Maths are commonly discomforted by even the smallest changes in the presentation of mathematical concepts; and they also find that tests commonly mainly show weaknesses rather than improve their understanding constructively. As a result, Michael tries to present mathematical problems to students by drawing on what students have encountered before. He aims to enable them to see how general concepts can be applied systematically and repeatedly to address misconceptions. Therefore, students experience the buzz of getting something right which they have failed at previously.
