Practice:
Helen is the Director of MFL at Rushey Mead Academy in Leicester, which prides itself with a focus on language development. Every student at the Academy studies at least one language to GCSE level. Some of the students at the Academy are even GCSE trilinguists! Helen leads a team of 10 teachers, including French, Spanish, Gujarati, and Italian. Recently the faculty have been involved in a national DFE-funded project to improve primary MFL teaching and as part of this they have created a scheme of work to teach French phonics, incorporating the teaching of poetry, literature and songs.
 
Impact:
In 2015 72% of a cohort of 235 students achieved an A*- C grade in French. All students value and enjoy their MFL lessons and the faculty consistently receives praise for the quality of teaching and learning and the innovative teaching strategies it uses. Helen’s leadership has ensured success, engagement and enjoyment for both staff and students.
