Case Study:
Mark Atkinson, Year 6 teacher
Victoria Park Primary Academy

Practice:
Mark was part of a 2 year Flipped Learning Project which was trialled in Years 5 and 6. This looked at the impact of Flipped Learning in Maths. We conducted the project in collaboration with Shireland Collegiate Academy and the EEF. Mark worked on building ICT resources for pupils which included mind maps and Picture Maths, as part of this project. Tasks are now available for pupils to access online. We have Flipped Friday every week at Victoria Park where children are given mental maths concepts for homework and they work on that over the weekend. Mondays are then SPLAT days where children use post its and critically analyse their learning. Teachers then spend Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays planning learning linked to that. Learning is therefore needs focused for all our pupils.

Impact:
Flipped learning has now been rolled out to Years 1 to 6 and across other subjects. The project has resulted in children thinking more critically about their learning, thinking of concepts behind Maths and not just the answer. Children are problem solving more creatively and they are more independent, particularly in upper KS2. We know Mark's work has made an impact on both pupils and staff through consultations and we have found that children are more motivated to learn and have really built up their confidence which is always important.
