Case Study - The Castle School | Award Nomination 2016

We are delighted that the Whole Education Award for Student Leadership in 2016 was sponsored by National Citizen Service.

National Citizen Service (NCS) is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity open to all 16 & 17-year-olds in England and Northern Ireland that helps them to build skills for work and life, and make a contribution to their community. It costs nothing for a school to support NCS and government funding ensures that participants pay no more than £50 to secure their place, with bursaries available for those unable to meet the cost. Over 200,000 young people have already taken part in NCS and the latest IPSOS Mori evaluation, published in December 2015, found that 91% feel they learn important skills for the future, 82% feel more positive about people from different backgrounds and the average participant spends an additional six hours helping out in their community each month. Young people also leave NCS equipped with important character strengths needed to flourish in later life.

Case Study:

Clio Corpe, Associate SLT
The Castle School

Practice:
Clio has worked on student leadership in a number of guises during her time at The Castle, including developing that aspect of 'Challenge Wednesdays', a skills-based learning programme. However this year, together with five year 8, students she has moved student leadership in a different direction, taking the Learn to Lead model back to the whole of year 8, and planning a really successful full-day off-timetable which encouraged students to really see The Castle as their school, and to consider how they could use their skills to make positive changes in the school community.

Impact:
Clio's enthusiasm is infectious and has given the year 8 students the right level of support and encouragement, whilst still ensuring that they come up with the ideas, and that they meet regularly and monitor their own progress. Her off-timetable launch day involved every tutor in the year group, and so Clio also communicated effectively with them to make sure they understood the Learn to Lead approach and were confident delivering the training to students.
