Case Study:
Claire Dickinson, Acting HOY/Head of Drama
Northfield School

Practice:
Attending the Spirals training last year, Claire has since intensively looked at students’ attitudes to learning in drama. She has also promoted the spirals inquiry, and taken the lead on conducting critical interviews with identified students . The findings have been disseminated with the year and leadership team and this has changed practice across the school. Claire has also worked with a group of SEND students preparing ignite talks to promote their self-confidence. She strongly believes that children who can talk fluently with confidence, will also gain confidence as learners as a result.

Impact:
The Spiral of Inquiry led the school to reconsider the impact of Drama on children. Essentially, they concluded that the perception of Drama amongst students and staff needed to be changed in order to promote and uncover the often hidden skills inherent in every drama class, like empathy, presentation and communication skills. Claire and the department also conducted research to investigate the public’s perception of Drama Education and presented their findings to the Senior Leadership Team with success. In addition, working with the SEND students in Year 7, Claire successfully promoted the development of empathy and communication skills, which children are often missing when embarking on their life after school.
