Case study | Crosshall Junior School | Future Me

'Future Me' is a scheme which provides a cohesive approach to recognising and celebrating the ‘hidden curriculum’. This is linked to a rewards structure which has proved extremely motivating and popular with pupils and encourages aspirations in relation to the both the core school expectations and the wider school aim of ‘Achieve Your Dreams’. Students are encouraged to think about what jobs they might want to do as adults and the skills, qualifications and qualities they will need for these jobs. They are rewarded on bronze, silver and gold levels for demonstrating behaviours that fall into 5 categories: excellence, independence and determination; entrepreneurship and innovation; team work and friendship; respect: self, globally and the environment; behaviour. Students are given opportunities to visit the workplaces of people doing jobs they aspire to, in order to cement the link between learning the skills and being successful adults.

Pupils speak very positively about Future Me saying, ‘It helps you in the future to get a job;’ ‘I’m working hard to become an ambassador;’ and ‘It helps me try to do things I might not usually try.’ It is clearly having an impact in terms of the school’s work in links with home as children compare their progress with Future Me with their siblings and also provide evidence of things they are doing at home as examples for assessment (e.g. under respect, one way to demonstrate progress is to care for a pet at home for a half term).

The Future Me scheme has gone from strength to strength since Whole Education's Peer Review of the programme last year. As well as considering the qualities and knowledge needed to do jobs that interest them and be people they aspire to be, Crosshall students now have opportunities to visit professionals in their places of work and experience what their jobs involve.
