Case Study:
Struan Mitchell, Head of Guild
Lipson Cooperative Academy

Practice:
Struan is certainly no pushover, as the impressive attendance rates from the most deprived students at the Lipson Cooperative Academy demonstrate. He is differentiating himself from others through his impressive ability to get through to some of the most neglected children and to most vulnerable or criminalised families. He has a strong will to never give in. Struan also provides 1-2-1 support for children who are having difficulty in mathematics lessons to ensure every child has an equal opportunity to participate. Essentially, Struan’s additional support is often the make or break point in a child’s life.

Impact:
Struan holds an invaluable position in our Academy because of his consistent support to enable students to thrive in and out of school. He has unbreakable bonds with some of the most challenging students with difficult backgrounds.. and regularly describes his day as shaping the whole child and giving them the belief that everything and anything is achievable. Struan also significantly developed the extracurricular rugby team which led to successes in local and regional competitions. The RFU have recognised this, and awarded the school 'The GOLD standard' charter mark for students’ development and community cohesion. Lipson Cooperative Academy is one of ten schools in England who received this award.
