SEN leaders

Supporting schools to raise standards for children with SEN by developing and deploying SEN Leaders from within the system to spread their expertise.

The challenge

All teachers are teachers of children with special educational needs, but often the expertise to support students who may present with multiple and wide-ranging needs lies with one person in the school: the SEN(D) Coordinator. Expertise is not easily shared between schools, meaning that insights gained in one school may not reach other schools where they are needed.

The Project

Developed by London Leadership Strategy, and funded by the DfE, the SEN Leaders programme supports schools to:

+ identify areas for improvement within SEN provision using a self-audit tool
+ equip and train system leaders in SEN to deploy across local networks and nationally
+ help embed a focus on SEN into normal school improvement practices
