Why learning fails and why knowledge alone isn't enough — Alex Quigley

Being 'knowledge rich' is necessary for learning but it is insufficient for student success. Too many students fail because they cannot apply their knowledge with independence. This session explores the vital importance of independence and how to foster it in our students, so that they are motivated and successful.

Alex is a nationally recognised literacy specialist, author and former school-leader. He began as an English teacher before leading a research school and is now Head of Content & Engagement at the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF), translating research into classroom practice. His books include Closing the Reading Gap, Closing the Vocabulary Gap, Why Learning Fails and The Confident Teacher.
