Learning to “Be”: Education beyond subject learning — Dr. James Mannion
Insights from neuroscience and psychology increasingly show that learning is shaped not only by cognition, but also by emotional, social and motivational factors. If these foundations are weak, subject learning and personal growth become harder to sustain. Drawing on the Learner Effectiveness Programme, a national initiative developed in collaboration with the Welsh Government, this workshop presents a practical framework for developing seven domains of human capability that underpin successful learning and development: physical, emotional, habitual, relational, cognitive, moral/ethical, and navigational. We'll explore how cultivating these foundations strengthens both wellbeing and academic achievement – and what a more expansive vision of education might look like in your school.
